Abstract

Diabetes Mellitus (DM) and its complications are important metabolic diseases that threaten human health. Although new strategies have been developed for the prevention and treatment of DM and its complications, an optimal treatment is not yet available. Understanding the molecular mechanisms of DM and its complications is important in discovering these new treatment strategies. It is known that ferroptosis, a type of non-apoptotic cell death characterized by iron-mediated lipid peroxide accumulation, provides new ways to investigate the intersection of cellular metabolism, oxidative stress, and disease pathology. It is also suggested that ferroptosis plays a role in the emergence of DM, a metabolic disease, and its complications. However, many studies have been published showing that ferroptosis plays an important role in the pathophysiology and pathogenesis of DM. This review aims to review the mechanisms that cause ferroptosis, a form of programmed death, and the relationship between ferroptosis and DM and its complications.
