Determination of the use of individual diet product by body mass index

Abstract

Objective: This research is applied to determine dietary food consumption and consumption reasons of individuals who applied to a private hospital’s dietary polyclinic in İstanbul in order to lose weight or eat healthy and were put into groups according to their Body Mass Index (BMI) levels. Methods: In this study, 250 people who applied to the diet outpatient clinic of a private hospital in Istanbul within 1 month in order to lose weight or eat healthy were selected as a sample. It was conducted on 206 people who agreed to participate in the research by complying with the inclusion criteria. The status of using dietary products, the dietary products they use, the reasons for using and choosing diet products, their opinions about the products and their awareness levels were determined by the descriptive questionnaire method created by the research. Results: The dietary supplies they consume, consumption and selection reasons of the dietary supplies, thoughts and level of consciousness determined during the research. 87.4% of the attendants are using dietary supplements. 50.3% of the attendants, who consume dietary supplement, consume only when they are on diet. 17.5% think that the dietary supplies are zero calorie, 17% of the attendants think that these supplies are zero fat, 10.7% think they can eat these supplies as many as they can because it will be harmless. It is determined that 19.6% of the attendants have concerns about dietary supplements. 97% of the morbid obese people, 100% of the obese people, 98% of the overweight people, 91% of the normal weight people, 57% of the thin people use dietary supplements. The most used dietary product for all BMI levels, respectively; Whole wheat bread (69%), rye bread (49.5%), diet beverage (30.6%), diet biscuit (55.8%) and sweetener (25.7%) were found, while diet cheese, diet buttermilk, breakfast cereal were less consumed products. Diet cheese, diet buttermilk and cereals have the lowest percentage in this category. People with the health problems are more likely to consume dietary supplies, when compared to health people. Conclusion: It is clearly understood that society’s awareness should be raised about dietary supplements and their contents.
